What are Whiteflies?

Whiteflies more closely resemble little white moths than a fly that is white. They have wings, as well as a needle-like mouth that allows them to pierce leaves and suck nutrients from plants. Their feeding can stunt leaf growth and cause their yellowing, eventually causing leaves to drop or plant death. There are 75 species of the whitefly living in Florida, which include the rugose spiraling whitefly and the ficus whitefly. These two species wreak the most havoc to the Florida landscape.

White fly

Ficus Whitefly

First discovered in 2006 in the continental United States, the ficus whitefly has since quickly spread through Southeast Florida, feeding on ficus and species of fig since, causing great damage to the population of these plants. Their life cycle of around one month begins when eggs are laid on a leaf’s underside. A crawler hatches out and evolves into a nymph which feeds on the leaves with its needle-mouth. Roughly two to three weeks later, the adult winged ficus whitefly emerges and dies in approximately one week.

The clearest sign of a ficus whitefly infestation is defoliation of ficus plants. Unfortunately, by the time the plant loses its leaves, the infestation has been present for several generations of the pest. The beginning stages of a ficus whitefly infestation are more difficult to spot; experts recommend property owners monitor ficus plants for signs of the nymphs, so the infestation can be treated before large populations occur.

Rugose Spiraling Whitefly

The rugose spiraling whitefly was first found in South Florida in 2009 on gumbo limbo trees. It has not yet been discovered how these pests kill their hosts. The rugose spiraling whitefly feeds on a wider range of plants, such as coconut palms and other palms, gumbo limbo trees, black olive trees and calophyllum trees.

This species of whitefly is three times bigger than the majority of whiteflies. The adult whiteflies gather on the undersides of their host’s leaves, laying eggs in a spiral pattern; this gives the species its name. The rugose spiraling whitefly sucks essential nutrients from their hosts while creating a large volume of honeydew excrement. This excrement covers the leaves, dripping onto the surfaces below the plant. An infestation can lead to a heavy buildup of black, soot-like mold, which will damage vehicles, decks, pools, docks, outdoor furniture and other items. Rugose spiraling whiteflies also cause serious damage to local plant life, causing population decline, defoliation, and die-back of branches.
